New Perspectives Event Series Explores Inner and Outer Naturescapes
Since 2005, Lexie Hallahan, Visionary and Director of NW Women’s Surf Camps, has been empowering women and girls with the transformative skills of surfing and offering her students the intimate knowledge of the Ocean, tides, swells and winds, which she calls the “recipe for a perfect wave”. Celebrating 20 years this summer season, she has expanded her unique program of summer surfing events to include an expansive new way for women and teen girls to experience nature and all that the North Coast offers, in her day adventure series, New Perspectives.
These three partnered events are with local Bohemian women leaders in the outdoor adventure fields, who have broken the fragile glass ceiling of traditional roles, by following their passions and innate purpose in their own ways. Hallahan seeked out these women and created New Perspectives Day Adventures, with her own added finesse at facilitating women’s circles and workshops gained in twenty years of her women’s camps, weekenders, and week retreats experience. An intention is highlighted in each event that is then explored in a nature based workshop in-depth, after groups have immersed themselves in the outdoor adventure.
Starting the summer series off is “Fish On Femmes” Fish-Crab-Seaweed Charter on June 2 from 6:30 am to 3 pm. Experienced Garibaldi Charter Captain Tamara Mautner and Shifting Tides seaweed farmer and deckhand, Alanna Keiffer, are the participant’s Guides in how to catch bottom fish and crab, as well as discovering how seaweed is farmed and harvested. Hallahan leads the women’s workshop which explores seeing oneself in non-traditional roles, careers and life paths. Crabrock Pizza lunch and seaweed tour with cooking demo by Keiffer are enjoyed in the harbor; all the fish and crab caught is shared with group and a cooked crab cleaning is included in this event.
Exploring the heavenly Nehalem Bay by kayak with Tillamook Kayak owner, Sydney Elliott and one of her female guides, is the naturescape that the second event is set in on June 29, from 8 am to 3 pm. Catered luncheon prepared by CHEZ Café’ is enjoyed on Nehalem Bay beach after the paddle adventure wraps up. This aptly named event called “Reflections” focuses on the many ways that water and life reflect back to us our true inner knowing and authentic selves. The workshop will integrate each person’s experience on the water with their own personal reflections. All equipment and paddling instruction is included.
Hiking the first and second legs of the Oregon Coast Trail is the adventure focus in the third event of the series, “Spaciousness” Hiking the OCT with author and hiker extraordinaire, Bonnie Henderson, held at Fort Stevens State Park on July 13 from 8 am to 3 PM. This stretch of the infamous trail is the longest contiguous beach stretch of its 425 mile length. A women’s circle and workshop follows Chez Café’ lunch at Coffenbury Lake with signed copies of Henderson’s newest OCT book as a gift. The vastness and space felt hiking adjacent to the sand dunes and expansive ocean environment is refreshingly uplifting and renewing.
Meant to inspire all participants with “new perspectives” to grow and move forward in their lives, space is limited to a dozen women and teen girls 16 to 19 years in each, keeping a connective sense of spirit and intimacy for all event adventurers.
